Studio Europe was born under the circumstances in response to  the sudden start of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 (see About).
In 2020, as a prototype of a platform, Studio Europe brought together three design studios of different chairs at ETH Zurich who were all dealing with architecture, urban design, territories and transformation and who worked with their students on case studies in various parts of Southeast Europe.

For the fall semester of 2020 Prof. Milica Topalovic’s ‘Chair of Architecture of Territory’, Prof. Hubert Klumpner’s ‘Chair of Architecture and Urban Design’ and Newrope, Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation are represented here with student projects. The three design studios of this semester focus on Zürich, Switzerland, Barranquilla, Colombia and Tirana, Albania, respectively.

For the spring semester of 2020, Prof. Milica Topalovic’s ‘Chair of Architecture of Territory’, Prof. Hubert Klumpner’s ‘Chair of Architecture and Urban Design’ and the Newrope, Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation are represented here with student projects. The three design studios, focussing respectively on Albania, Rijeka and Piraeus, are not only geographically close to each other, they also deal with similar forces affecting the urban and rural development of this part of Europe, challenging the definition of "Europe" itself.

The three studios are raising similar issues and propose overlapping ideas and design proposals, and directly or indirectly deal with some of the following overarching topics:

︎ New Ecologies
︎ City and Countryside
︎ Beijing in the Balkans
︎ Re-defining Europe
